What is a Lip Repositioning?

Excessive appearance of gums while smiling can create unhappiness in aesthetic sense. Although this rate of unhappiness is at different points compared to men and women, it is an undesirable appearance for the gums to appear intensely. Although methods such as botox are used to remove this image, but this is not permanent and the lip may need to be reshaped for permanent solutions. How is Lip Repositioning Surgery Performed?

Lip repositioning surgery is a simple technique that lowers your lip when you smile. A small band of gum tissue is removed from under the lip, then the gum tissue is sutured to a lower position. That’s all it is. When the area heals, there is no scar.

When you smile, there is no change in the outer part of the face. The only difference is that when you smile, your lip is not pulled up as much as before. Sometimes, botox application can be done either before or during the surgery in order to make the surgery more permanent.

Who is Lip Repositioning Surgery Performed to?

After the application, strenuous exercises are not recommended for our patients. It is necessary to avoid applications that will cause swelling of the face, such as taking a shower with very hot water and sauna. It is also recommended not to open your mouth too much while smiling. Our patients can feel a difference while smiling. This difference will become natural over time. It is quite normal to avoid smiling during the presence of stitches. After a week, the stitches can be easily removed.

How Long Does the Effect of Lip Repositioning Surgery Last?

After the first four weeks of healing, our patients may have difficulties in the placement and positioning of the lip while smiling for the first six months. However, after six months, the lip repositioning surgery will be permanent.

The treatment plan should be done by the specialist doctor on oral surgery or periodontology. Gummy smile can be caused by a variety of reasons. If the reason is due to the soft tissue and the muscle hyperactivity; it is possible to solve this problem by lip repositioning.

What Should You Expect in Lip Positioning Treatment?

The purpose of a lip repositioning procedure is to reduce or shortening the distance between the inner aspect of my lip and the existing gum so that the lip is restricted when a person smile and thus, the lips will not rise as high as it does now.

Some patients do not respond successfully to lip repositioning procedure. It means that the problem is not due to soft tissue, it is because of skeletal problem and need to be done orthognathic surgery. Sometimes the lip still rises as high as it does now, for which Dr. may consider a re-entry procedure or redo the procedure if necessary.

How Long Does Lip Repositioning Surgery Take?

The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. Local anesthesia is used in lip positioning surgery. Morever lip repositioning surgery can be done under sedation or general anestesia.

How Long is the Recovery Time in Lip Repositioning Surgery?

Recovery for lip repositioning surgery is usually three to four days. During this period, you can use painkillers and antibiotics that your doctor will prescribe. This is why the patients don’t need to stay a long period if they do lip repositioning in Turkey. The pain is moderate and usually after 3-4 days, patients can return to their normal daily life completely.

Who is Suitable for Lip Repositioning Treatment?

The diagnosis of gummy smile is the most important part of the treatment plan. Gummy smile correction treatments are depends on the cause of the excessive gingival tissues. If the problem is not sceletal, the soft tissues and the muscles that pulls the lips should be observed. There can be various treatment plan for gummy smile such as crown lengthening, gingivectomy, osteoplasty and lip repositioning.

So is this process permanent?

In a study in which hundreds of scientific articles on the subject were compiled, it was reported that the permanence of those who had this procedure was at least 75% and that there were fewer complications compared to orthognathic surgery, resulting in a high level of satisfaction with the treatment.

How do we do this?

First of all, we take photographs and video recordings in the digital environment. We design the visible gums during the resting position, speaking, smiling and excessive laughing, with technological applications, on a personalized computer, how many millimeters the lip should be shortened.

We evaluate this as the ratio of the 1/3 lower part of the face, from the base of the nose to the lowest soft tissue of the chin, to the total face height, according to the person’s face. According to this ratio, we make a shortening by the distance that needs to be shortened at the surgical stage.
